SEO Google Dance - Implications for Web Design
A client of ours recently experienced a loss of Search Ranking Position (SRP) for their primary search phrase, which coincided with Google's new algorithm update known as Caffeine. All their other search terms maintained their previous positions, which suggested the site was not blacklisted, but rather penalised for a high keyword density relating to this specific search phrase. We took the following actions:
- Modified their news module to enable us to categorise news stories by search terms and dates;
- Balanced keyword density throughout each page for all search terms;
- Checked for broken links;
- Enhanced web design to reduce the load time of the site;
- Used specialist SEO tools to ensure that page content had not been duplicated.
Thanks to these and other measures, the penalty has now been lifted and the site has returned to page one. In addition we have begun a link building campaign to ensure positions are maintained.
If you are responsible for the web page design and content of your own website, you need to make sure that you do not over optimise for any phrase. We recommend a density of no more than 5% per term, per page.
If you find yourself adversely affected by Google's new Caffeine algorithm update get in touch and see how we can help.
