The challenge

The European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB 2016) is the 2016 joint meeting of the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology and the Society for Mathematical Biology. The University of Nottingham approached us to create a new website based around the society's complex annual conferencing timetables. With several conferences taking place on any given day, the main challenge was presenting a wealth of information in a clear and concise manner, across all devices.

Our research

We invested a lot of time in understanding the client’s user types and how they navigated around the existing site. We had to ensure that the website was tailored to the client’s requirements and provided an easy-to-use format. On the existing site, users were able to upload important news about upcoming conferences, but it was complex. The upload form had to handle several types of submission, so it was important to create a form that was able to adapt dynamically, dependent on the user’s requirement.

What we did

We built upon a pre-existing WordPress conference theme and adapted the style and development to suit the client’s branding. With the vast amount of content needing to be displayed, we created bespoke pages with clear planning, wire framing and clean design. We increased usability by creating clear click-throughs, enabling the visitor to log-in, submit their extracts and create their own tracks and wishlists. This user-friendly approach transferred successfully to mobile, enabling busy professionals to access the site on-the-go.
