INSIDE THE PLAN

What we cover in our Magento fixed-cost maintenance plans

  • Test environment setup and hosting

  • 4 security patches installed per year

  • 2 critical patches installed upon release by Adobe

  • 1 Magento version upgrade per year

  • Server-level software updates included (when hosting with Absolute)

  • Quarterly security and maintenance reports

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED

When is Magento support better suited for your needs?

A fixed-cost maintenance plan is designed to keep your Magento website secure, supported and running reliably. It covers essential maintenance such as platform updates, security patching and ongoing stability, helping reduce risk and avoid unexpected issues.

If your priorities extend beyond maintenance and security, a Magento support plan is also something you should consider. Support plans are intended for ongoing development work, including new features, functional improvements, system integrations and changes that support growth. This type of work requires flexibility and dedicated development time, rather than a maintenance-led approach.

In many cases, businesses use a fixed cost maintenance plan to protect the platform, alongside a support plan to drive improvements and scale over time.

BENEFITS

The value of fixed-cost Magento maintenance services

Keeping a Magento store running smoothly involves ongoing maintenance, updates and security patching. These tasks are a normal part of operating the platform, but they can be time-consuming and easy to push down the priority list. A fixed-cost Magento maintenance service helps by taking care of this essential work in a proactive, structured and predictable way, reducing day-to-day pressure and avoiding unexpected issues.

Reduced risk and a smoother upgrade process

Ensuring your Magento site is updated in line with each release is more efficient than skipping versions. The changes between individual releases are tested by Adobe and are usually incremental adjustments rather than major changes.

A fixed-cost maintenance plan from Absolute keeps your Magento store current and compliant, helping to ensure extensions remain compatible and upgrades are planned, tested and delivered without last-minute pressure.

Small, regular upgrades to your Magento store offer a better approach

Running small, regular upgrades is usually more effective than attempting larger “once in a blue moon” changes to your Magento store. Smaller changes are easier to test, quicker to implement, and less likely to introduce unexpected issues.

In contrast, major upgrades and patches often involve many changes at once, increasing the risk of incompatibilities, delays, and disruption to day-to-day trading.

New features and functionalities

With each patch release, Magento includes improvements to platform stability, admin usability and core functionality. Keeping your store updated allows you to benefit from these improvements as they’re released, rather than relying on workarounds or additional third-party tools to fill the gaps.

Test environment setup and hosting

Using a dedicated environment ensures that your Magento upgrade can move forward independently, without disruption to any ongoing (or urgent) support and development work. Once the developer has successfully upgraded the Magento version/any related modules on their local, they will then deploy the upgrade to the test environment for pre-fix testing. Our fixed-cost Magento maintenance service allows for two months development site hosting, which is the typical duration of an Magento version upgrade.

Proactive security patching

Magento upgrades frequently include essential security patches that reduce the risk of cyber attacks, hacking attempts, and instability within your eCommerce store. These updates help safeguard your site, ensuring it runs securely and efficiently.

Within 48 hours of the Adobe announcement of the APSB24-73 patch, 90% of our clients’ sites on Magento support plans were patched and secure. As an Adobe Partner, we are given advance notice of patches so we can ensure timely delivery.

Performance improvements and stability gains

An upgraded version enhances site speed, features redesigned pages, and improves the loading times of various elements. These enhancements collectively boost your site’s performance and increase conversion rates. Regular upgrades not only improve performance, they also support long-term stability.

RISKS EXPLAINED

Why you can't afford to ignore proactive Magento maintenance

Magento updates, patches and version changes don’t stop just because a site is stable today. Over time, falling behind increases security exposure, limits compatibility with extensions and integrations, and makes future upgrades more complex and costly than they need to be.

Proactive maintenance for your Magento website keeps your current version aligned as changes are released, helping avoid unnecessary risk and reducing the effort required to keep the store supported in the long term.

Increased security vulnerabilities

Unpatched Magento stores are a common target for automated cyber attacks. Missed security updates leave known vulnerabilities exposed, increasing the risk of data breaches, malware and site compromises.

PCI compliance risk

Magento merchants processing card payments in checkout are required to meet PCI-DSS standards. If you're currently running outdated M1/2 versions or missing security patches, this can put your store out of compliance, which may lead to failed audits, payment provider restrictions or increased transaction fees and fines.

PCI-DSS self-certification responsibility

Most merchants complete an annual PCI Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) or similar validation to attest to compliance, and that attestation is generally valid for 12 months. This means your platform must stay secure and up to date throughout the year, not just at the moment you submit the form.
Using a third-party payment gateway can reduce the scope of PCI-DSS, but responsibility for maintaining supported software and applying security patches still rests with you. A fixed cost maintenance service helps manage these updates, reducing compliance risk and avoiding reliance on workarounds or third-party tools to compensate for outdated software.

Higher long-term costs

Delaying maintenance, updates and upgrades often results in larger, more complex work later on. Skipping versions increases the chance of upgrade failures, extension conflicts and emergency development work. All of which are more expensive and disruptive than regular, planned maintenance.

Extension and functionality failures

Outdated extensions and bespoke code are more likely to break as Magento evolves. Without ongoing compatibility checks, updates can cause unexpected issues across checkout, payments or integrations.

WHEN UPGRADES FAIL

Frequent issues encountered during upgrades without Magento support

Magento upgrades bring critical security fixes and platform improvements. But without structured, ongoing maintenance and support, they’re also one of the most common causes of downtime, broken functionality and lost revenue. Many issues don’t appear immediately, or only surface once a patch or upgrade is already in progress. Without an experienced Magento support team in place, these problems can delay releases, increase costs and put live trading at risk.

Code and compatibility issues

Platform changes introduced in newer Magento versions (such as shifts in data serialisation and PHP behaviour) can cause custom code and third-party extensions to fail. Without careful review and refactoring, this can result in checkout errors, broken features or unexpected behaviour across the site.

Content and WYSIWYG issues

Magento upgrades can affect how content is stored and rendered. In some cases, changes made in the admin editor may not save correctly or display as expected, creating content inconsistencies that are easy to miss but damaging for merchandising and marketing teams.

Database and data integrity risks

Upgrade processes rely on clean, reliable database structures. Issues with URL rewrites, legacy data or incomplete backups can lead to data loss or post-launch errors if not identified and resolved early.

Third-party extension conflicts

Magento core updates frequently impact third-party modules. Extensions that aren’t actively maintained or tested against the latest versions can introduce errors, performance issues or security vulnerabilities - particularly in checkout, payments and integrations.

OUR PROCESS

How we keep your Magento website secure, stable and supported

Magento upgrades bring critical security fixes and platform improvements. But without structured, ongoing maintenance and support, they’re also one of the most common causes of downtime, broken functionality and lost revenue. Many issues don’t appear immediately, or only surface once a patch or upgrade is already in progress. Without an experienced Magento support team in place, these problems can delay releases, increase costs and put live trading at risk.

Proactive planning and version management

We take a strategic approach to Magento upgrades and security updates. Minor version upgrades are scheduled strategically within your plan to allow sufficient time for testing, while critical security patches are prioritised and applied promptly to keep your site secure and supported.

Safe, non-production upgrades

All upgrades are first completed in a local and test environment, never directly on your live site. This ensures that any issues with third-party modules, custom functionality or theme files are identified early, without impacting customers or trading.

Third-party module compatibility checks

As part of the upgrade process, we review all installed third-party modules for compatibility with the target Magento version. Where updates or renewed licences are required, we’ll flag this clearly so you can retain ownership of the licences while we handle the technical implementation.

Structured testing and fixes

Once the upgraded version is deployed to a test environment, we carry out core functionality testing across key areas of the site, such as browsing, checkout and account features. Any issues identified are resolved before progressing. This test-and-fix cycle continues until the agreed test plan is fully passed.

Your review and sign-off

Following our internal testing, the upgraded site is handed over for your review. This gives you the opportunity to test site-specific workflows and confirm everything behaves as expected before anything goes live.

Planned and coordinated deployment

Before deployment, we prepare a clear launch plan outlining timings, downtime expectations and any supporting service updates required. Live deployment is carefully coordinated and scheduled to minimise disruption, with the site placed into planned maintenance during the upgrade window.

Optional enhancements for complex upgrades

For larger version jumps or more revenue-sensitive sites, optional add-ons such as bespoke test plans and branded maintenance pages are available, providing additional reassurance and control during the upgrade process.

COMPARE SUPPORT OPTIONS

Fixed-cost Magento maintenance vs. ad-hoc support

Choosing the right Magento support model has a direct impact on cost control, risk and long-term platform stability. Here’s how fixed-cost maintenance compares to ad-hoc support.

Fixed-cost maintenance plan (recommended)

  • Predictable monthly cost you can budget for
  • Proactive security patching and planned upgrades included
  • Ongoing monitoring and maintenance handled continuously
  • Eliminated and reduced risk of emergency fixes and downtime
  • Best suited to business-critical Magento stores
  • Ensure PCI-DSS compliance and avoid penalties

Adhoc support

  • Monthly hours allocated to a mix of tasks
  • Work is often reactive and ticket-driven
  • Costs are still predictable, but outcomes vary month to month
  • Maintenance and upgrades can compete with other priorities
  • Best suited to teams with regular development needs
