Toggle is a Sheffield based platform that gives hospitality brands the tools to sell and redeem digital and physical gift cards, both online and in store. It's built for restaurants, bars, cafes and hospitality groups who want the whole journey, from purchase to redemption, handled in one place.

BRIEF.

Update Toggle’s WooCommerce plugin for the new React checkout.

We initially worked with Toggle on a joint project with Carluccio’s, where we delivered a technical specification and migration scope to implement Toggle at checkout. This entailed replacing Carluccio’s previous gift card platform that relied on discount codes rather than true gift vouchers, as it created complications around free delivery rules and other promotional discounts.

Toggle then approached us with an urgent issue. Their existing WooCommerce plugin stopped working when the platform moved to a new React‑based checkout.

They needed a replacement that let customers enter a gift card code, securely validate it with Toggle’s API, and instantly update the order total.

The new solution needed to be secure, resilient to future WooCommerce updates, and feel like a native part of the checkout. Reliability was the priority, since any friction at this point in the journey risked lost sales.

HOW WE HELPED.

Our development team delivered a native React checkout component that keeps WooCommerce and Toggle tightly integrated.

Absolute built a new WooCommerce checkout component using WooCommerce’s native React libraries, helping ensure long‑term compatibility with the platform. The component talks to a secure PHP endpoint, which then connects server‑to‑server with Toggle’s API to apply or remove gift cards safely.

We also implemented a customer‑specific way to hold gift card codes during checkout and trigger cart re‑calculation events, so the order total always reflects the correct remaining balance.

These features are now part of the Toggle core platform and we were delighted to have been asked to provide our WooCommerce development expertise in order to deliver this functionality.
