Your Shopify Thank You and Order Status pages are changing, here's what to do.

24 August 2026

Non-Plus Shopify stores must upgrade their Thank You and Order Status pages by 26 August 2026. Here's what you need to check.

Shopify is changing how its Thank you and Order status pages work for merchants on non-Plus plans. If you have customised either page with apps, additional scripts, tracking or pixels, there is an important deadline to be aware of.

Shopify's plan for upgrading checkout and Thank You pages

Shopify describes the new foundation as more secure and upgrade-safe, with customisations managed through supported extensions, blocks and pixels rather than older script-based methods.

This does not mean your entire Shopify checkout page needs to be rebuilt. The deadline specifically concerns the Thank You and Order Status pages, which customers see after completing checkout. If you've never customised these pages, there may be little or nothing you need to do.

If you have added apps, scripts, pixels or custom functionality, you should review your store before the deadline. In this guide, we'll explain what's changing, how to check your current setup and what you need to migrate.

What's changing on Shopify's checkout pages

Shopify has introduced a new foundation for checkout and customer accounts on non-Plus stores, and says it is more secure, upgrade-safe and easier to customise. The new Thank You and Order Status pages are built into this foundation and can be customised using the checkout and accounts editor.

The important point is that this change is narrower than a complete Shopify checkout rebuild. The 26 August 2026 deadline applies to the Thank You and Order Status pages, rather than the full checkout journey.

That distinction matters because many merchants will see references to Shopify's new checkout foundation and assume their entire checkout needs attention. For most non-Plus merchants, the immediate task is to review what has been added to these two post-purchase pages.

The change is particularly relevant if you have used:

  • Apps that add functionality to the Thank You or Order Status pages
  • Additional scripts for tracking or analytics
  • Pixels or other tracking customisations
  • Custom page content or functionality
  • Apps that previously relied on script tags

This new approach replaces these older methods with supported 3rd party and Shopify app blocks, web pixels and app pixels. This gives Shopify more control over what can run within the checkout environment and makes customisations easier to maintain as the platform evolves.

The deadline and who this update affects

The deadline applies to stores on non-Plus Shopify subscription plans. Shopify Plus merchants have a separate upgrade process and should follow Shopify's Plus-specific guidance instead.

The deadline for affected non-Plus stores is 26 August 2026.

There is one important exception. Stores on the Pause and Build plan are upgraded automatically, so no manual action is required. Shopify also warns that pausing a store can trigger an automatic upgrade that cannot subsequently be reverted simply by unpausing it.

To check which version of the pages your store is currently using:

  • Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin.
  • Find the relevant configuration in the Configurations section.
  • Look for the notice about upgrading your Thank You and Order Status pages.
  • If Shopify displays an upgrade notice, your store is still using the deprecated versions.

You can then select Review customizations to open Shopify's personalised upgrade guide. This report is the most useful starting point because it identifies the existing customisations Shopify has detected on your store.

Marketing (now called Growth in the menu) is an area in the Shopify admin where merchants have historically needed to stitch together a lot of separate tools to get a complete picture. Your campaign data lives in one place, your messaging in another, your ad spend somewhere else entirely.

Shopify Checkout Blocks

Why you should take action

The biggest change is the move away from legacy scripts and other customisation methods that Shopify no longer wants to support on these pages. Since 28 August 2025, the additional scripts section in checkout settings has been view-only. You can still see existing scripts, but you can no longer manually edit them there.

If you previously added tracking, analytics or other functionality through Additional scripts, those customisations need to be reviewed and replaced with supported alternatives.

For tracking, this generally means moving to app pixels or web pixels. For page functionality and content, the new pages use blocks and supported app extensions instead of arbitrary scripts.

This is part of Shopify's wider security and compatibility approach. Rather than allowing legacy code to modify these pages directly, the new checkout foundation provides controlled extension points that Shopify can maintain as the platform changes. That reduces the risk of customisations conflicting with future Shopify updates and limits the amount of sensitive information exposed to legacy scripts.

For store owners, the practical issue is straightforward: an app or script that works on your existing Thank You or Order Status page is not necessarily going to work on the new version. If it hasn't been migrated to Shopify's supported framework, its functionality may need to be replaced.

Operations updates tend to be the unglamorous side of a Shopify release, but they're often the ones that save the most time. This edition has some genuinely useful improvements to analytics, fulfilment, and inventory that are worth looking at closely if your back-end processes have been a pain point.

What you need to do before the deadline

Start with Shopify's personalised upgrade guide rather than trying to identify every customisation manually.

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout. In the relevant configuration, expand the notice about upgrading your Thank You and Order Status pages and select Review customizations. Shopify generates this guide automatically and uses it to show which existing customisations need attention.

Work through the guide before upgrading the live pages. In particular, check:

  • Which installed apps currently customise the pages
  • Which apps are already compatible with the new system
  • Which apps still require an update
  • Which additional scripts are currently being used
  • Which tracking functionality needs to move to pixels
  • Which page customisations need to be recreated with blocks

Once you've rebuilt and tested the required functionality, you can use the upgrade report to replace the existing Thank You and Order Status pages with the new versions. There's a lot to get excited about in this update. The improvements are focused on speed, better checkout management, and improved user experience.

Reviewing compatible Shopify apps

The Apps section of Shopify's upgrade guide shows installed apps that have been updated by their developers to work with the new Thank You and Order Status pages. This gives you a clearer route to migrating existing functionality without having to find a replacement for every app.

For apps that provide tracking or analytics, look for the Manage option. Selecting Manage allows you to configure the app's pixel so that customer event tracking continues to work with the new pages.

For apps that add functionality or content to the pages, use Add blocks where available. This allows you to recreate the existing page customisation using blocks within Shopify's checkout and accounts editor.

For example, an app that previously inserted functionality through a script may now provide a dedicated app block that can be positioned within the Thank You or Order Status page. Don't assume that an app appearing in your store automatically means its existing functionality will carry across.

Check the upgrade guide and complete the required setup for each compatible app.

Checkout is where everything either comes together or falls apart. These updates are focused on reducing friction at the point of purchase, whether that's giving customers more flexibility in how they pay and receive their order, or giving merchants better protection against fraud.

Handling incompatible Shopify apps

The Incompatible apps section of the upgrade guide shows apps installed on your store that have not yet been updated by their developers to work with the new Thank You and Order Status pages. This is particularly important if an app currently provides functionality that customers rely on after completing an order.

If the app has no compatible blocks or web pixels, its existing functionality may not be available once you move to the new pages. If you use custom apps, check the custom apps section and make sure any custom app pixels are correctly configured. You may need to contact the developer who built the custom app in the first place. Shopify specifically recommends checking these pixels so that tracking continues to work on the new pages.

For third-party apps that require an update, contact the app developer to find out whether a compatible version is available. If the developer cannot provide one, you may need to switch to an alternative app that supports the new Shopify page experience.

If you have several affected apps or a more complicated custom setup, this is where an experienced Shopify app development agency can help. They can assess what each app is doing, identify potential gaps and help find a practical replacement where necessary.

Replacing additional scripts and tracking

If you've been using Shopify's additional scripts section up until now for tracking or analytics, don't assume those scripts will continue to work after this update. The additional scripts section has been view-only since 28 August 2025, so Shopify requires existing customisations that rely on these scripts to be replaced on the new Thank You and Order Status pages. The right replacement depends on what the script was originally doing.

Shopify's upgrade guide categorises existing additional scripts and provides guidance on how to replace them. Depending on the functionality, you may be able to use:

  • A Shopify app
  • An app pixel
  • A web pixel
  • A built-in Shopify feature
  • A custom app or integration

For tracking specifically, app pixels and web pixels replace many of the use cases previously handled through additional scripts. Make sure the replacement is configured correctly and test the resulting data rather than assuming that installing a new pixel means tracking is working.

This is particularly important for analytics, advertising and other systems that rely on purchase or order events. A successful page upgrade does not necessarily mean your measurement setup is working correctly.

Rebuild page customisations with Shopify blocks

If you've customised the content or functionality of your Shopify Thank You page or Order Status page, you'll need to recreate those elements using the new checkout and accounts editor.

Compatible apps can provide blocks that you add to the relevant page. Shopify's upgrade guide uses Add blocks to help merchants recreate existing app-based page customisations. The exact process will depend on what you previously built. A simple content element may be straightforward to recreate, while functionality involving order tracking, loyalty, reviews, recommendations or other integrations may require more technical work.

Once the blocks and pixels have been configured, preview and test the new pages before publishing them. Check both the customer-facing experience and any associated tracking or integrations.

What happens if you miss the deadline

If you don't manually upgrade the pages before 26 August 2026, Shopify will automatically upgrade eligible non-Plus stores to the new Thank You and Order Status pages. The new versions replace the existing pages and their legacy customisations. That means waiting for the automatic upgrade is not a good way to avoid the work.

If your existing pages contain custom functionality, scripts or incompatible apps, you could find that elements no longer work as expected. There is a limited revert option for some stores that manually upgrade.

To qualify, all of Shopify's conditions must be met:

  • The store was created before 6 January 2025
  • The store has pre-existing Thank You or Order Status page customisations using additional scripts or apps that use script tags
  • The pages were manually upgraded less than 30 days ago

Even where those conditions are met, the revert option is only available before 26 August 2026.

If you do revert, Shopify does not simply delete the work you've done on the new pages. Customisations made with blocks and web pixels are saved as a draft configuration, which you can update and publish again later. The safer approach is still to complete testing before the deadline rather than relying on the revert option.
