Email marketing for Shopify: Klaviyo vs Dotdigital vs Shopify Email

Email Marketing

Email marketing remains one of the highest-returning channels available in eCommerce. When it's done well, it drives repeat purchases, increases customer lifetime value, and reduces your reliance on paid ads. But which tool is best for your Shopify store?

Why is email marketing important for eCommerce?

As your eCommerce business grows, so do customer expectations. Generic broadcast emails stop working. Buyers expect relevant messaging, personalised offers, and consistent communication across channels.

The email marketing tool you're using determines how well you can deliver that. It affects how deeply you can segment your audience, how sophisticated your automations can be, how clearly you can attribute revenue to email, and how much manual effort your team has to put in to make it all work.

Get it right, and email becomes one of the most reliable revenue channels in your business. Get it wrong, and you end up with an expensive platform where campaigns that don't convert, or happen at all. The cost isn't just financial, it's the missed opportunity every time a user slips through without a reason to come back.

We could have compared ten platforms here, but that wouldn't help anyone make a decision. Mailchimp, Mailerlite, Kit and others all have their place, but we've focused on these three because they're the ones we know, trust, and recommend to our Shopify clients time and time again.

Klaviyo vs Dotdigital vs Shopify Email

These three platforms are the most commonly compared email marketing tools among Shopify merchants, but they're not really competing for the same customer. Each one is built for a different stage of growth, and understanding where you sit is the fastest way to make the right call.

Shopify Email

Built directly into the Shopify admin, Shopify Email is the simplest option for small brands who haven’t yet dived properly into email marketing, and have a modest budget. There's no separate subscription to manage, no complex onboarding, and your store data flows in automatically. You can get campaigns running in minutes.

You can set up welcome emails, abandoned cart reminders, basic promotional campaigns, and post-purchase follow-ups without ever leaving the Shopify admin. Templates are ready to use, your product catalogue is already connected, and customer data pulls in automatically. If you want to get something out the door quickly, it genuinely delivers.

The trade-off is that the simplicity may not always be a good thing. Subscribers are bundled in with your customers, so customers aren’t always customers. Advanced segmentation, behaviour-based automation, and meaningful reporting simply aren't there.

Best for: Small or early-stage Shopify stores that want a straightforward, low-cost way to get email marketing up and running without the complexity of a dedicated platform.

Klaviyo

Klaviyo is built for growth-focused ecommerce brands that want email to work harder. It integrates deeply with Shopify, pulling in rich behavioural data that lets you trigger flows based on specific product views, purchase frequency, churn risk, and more.

The visual flow builder is powerful, segmentation is a genuine strength, and revenue attribution reporting helps you understand what's actually working. It also supports SMS natively, making omnichannel execution more straightforward.

The trade-off is complexity and cost. There's a steeper learning curve, and pricing is tied to active contact count, which can escalate quickly as your list grows. We’ve also found that if you have more than one Shopify store, you’ll need an additional Klaviyo account, you’re unable to connect to more than one store in a single Klaviyo account.

Best for: Growing eCommerce brands with expanding lists and teams ready to invest in data-driven automation and retention.

Dotdigital

Dotdigital sits at the enterprise end of the spectrum and is the platform we recommend most to our clients. It goes beyond email to support SMS, push notifications, and more complex cross-channel customer journeys, all from one platform.

It handles sophisticated logic and multi-step branching. Segmentation, custom reporting, and governance tools make it well suited to larger teams, multiple brands, or businesses with more complex compliance requirements. It's also the platform we used for Fired Earth, integrated alongside their Shopify Plus build.

The trade-off is that it's less intuitive than the other two and typically requires more involved implementation. Pricing is customised rather than fixed, so you'll need to get a quote based on your contact volume and channel requirements.

Best for: Established or enterprise businesses with complex marketing operations, omnichannel needs, and the team capacity to leverage it properly.

How they compare on the features that matter

Data integration with Shopify

All three connect to Shopify, but the depth varies. Shopify Email has the tightest out-of-the-box integration simply because it lives inside the admin. Klaviyo ingests rich ecommerce event data that feeds directly into automations. Dotdigital can handle extensive custom data needs, though setup typically requires more technical involvement.

Automation

Shopify Email covers basic flows. Klaviyo's visual builder lets you create multi-step, behaviour-triggered journeys with real complexity. Dotdigital matches that with robust journey builders that support cross-channel actions and advanced branching logic.

Segmentation and personalisation

Shopify Email offers functional but simple segmentation. Klaviyo is a standout here, letting you build highly specific audiences based on real-time behaviour. Dotdigital offers similarly sophisticated tools, particularly suited to teams managing large or complex customer databases.

Reporting

Shopify Email gives you open rates, click rates, and send metrics. Klaviyo adds revenue attribution, trend analysis, and performance benchmarks. Dotdigital provides comprehensive dashboards and custom reporting built for team-level governance and deeper analysis.

Omnichannel

Shopify Email is email only. Klaviyo supports SMS, Whatsapp, and social media, alongside email. Dotdigital goes furthest, supporting email, SMS, apps, ads, push notifications, and more from a single platform.

Comparing the costs of email marketing tools

Without going into fixed figures that change regularly, here's how the pricing models work:

Shopify Email is the most cost-effective entry point. It's included with your Shopify plan and uses a pay-as-you-go model based on send volume rather than contact count. For stores sending modest volumes, it's very affordable.

Klaviyo prices by active contact count, which means costs can rise quickly as your list grows, even if your send frequency stays the same. It rewards good list hygiene, but can feel expensive for fast-growing stores.

Dotdigital uses customised pricing based on contact volume, channels used, and feature requirements. It's the highest investment of the three, but for the right business looking to get more out of email marketing, the capability justifies the cost.

Signs you've outgrown your current email marketing tool

If any of these sound familiar, it's probably time to switch to another tool:

  • Your campaigns feel generic and you can't segment effectively
  • You're losing abandoned carts you know you could recover with better automation
  • You have no clear view of which emails are driving revenue
  • You want to coordinate email and SMS but can't from one place
  • Your list is growing but your results aren't

On the flip side, if your store is small, your send volumes are low, and your team doesn't have capacity for a more complex platform, adopting Klaviyo or Dotdigital too early creates unnecessary cost and overhead. Start simple and upgrade when you genuinely need to.

Which email marketing tool should you choose?

There's no universally right answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is oversimplifying. The best email platform for your Shopify store is the one that matches where you are right now, not where you hope to be in two years, and not what your competitors are using.

Price matters. So do features, and how much complexity you're actually ready to manage. The most powerful platform in the world is worthless if it never gets set up properly.

If you're just starting out and want low-cost, low-friction email marketing, Shopify Email does the job. If you're scaling and want data-driven automation and strong segmentation, Klaviyo is worth the investment. If you're an established business with complex marketing operations, omnichannel ambitions, and a team to support it, Dotdigital is the platform we'd point you towards, and the one we implement most for our own clients.

The risk isn't just picking the wrong platform. It's picking it at the wrong time.
