Trade and wholesale customers expect a dedicated experience. They're not browsing like retail shoppers. They want to log in, see their pricing, access the right products and place orders quickly. A structured Shopify B2B account makes that possible.
Without proper account management, things break down fast:
A Shopify B2B portal solves this by putting control around access, pricing and terms. Everything ties back to the account, not handled as one-off exceptions. Your Shopify B2B login becomes the gateway into a properly controlled trade environment.
Wholesale and trade accounts on Shopify Plus are the infrastructure your whole B2B setup sits on. Pricing, catalogues, permissions and operations all depend on them. Get this right and everything else becomes far easier to manage and scale.

We built a Shopify Plus trade portal for Fired Earth
A Shopify B2B customer account is more than just a login to place orders. It's a structured setup that defines how each customer interacts with your store.
At a basic level, this includes a gated wholesale login, so only approved customers can see trade pricing and products in the first place. Once their application is approved, customers are grouped into company profiles, which lets you manage multiple buyers under one business with shared terms and pricing.
This is very different from a standard Shopify customer account. Retail accounts store basic details and order history, but they don't typically control pricing, access or approval (however this can be achieved through custom Shopify development services). There's no company structure or trade logic sitting behind them at all.
On standard Shopify, customer approval is usually handled manually. You might collect applications through a form, review them internally, and then assign tags or metafields to control access. This often means tagging customers as "trade" or "approved".
This works fine at a small scale, but it leans heavily on manual processes. As your customer base grows, it gets harder to manage, and it's easy to assign the wrong tag, miss an approval step, or expose pricing that shouldn't be visible yet.
There's also no built-in structure for managing companies with multiple buyers. Everything happens at an individual customer level, even when they are employees at the same company. This adds complexity and increases the risk of errors creeping in.
On Shopify Plus, B2B is built around company accounts rather than individual customers. Each company represents a trade customer, with its own pricing, terms and structure.

A trade portal does more than control access and pricing. Once it's in place, it starts changing the shape of how your wholesale customers buy from your website.

Before going ahead with migrating your website to Shopify Plus, you need to define how your trade operation actually works. The structure of your wholesale accounts will affect pricing, access and how orders flow through your business.
These are the questions that should be answered before you start building your trade website, and it's where we typically focus our discovery phase of any Shopify B2B project, helping our clients define the right structure and avoid complexity they don't need.
If you're planning a Shopify B2B build, or looking to improve how your wholesale accounts already work, we can help. We have hands-on experience delivering Shopify Plus B2B projects and real-world trade store builds for Fired Earth and Splash About.
